Detailed Walkthrough

A Stolen Toolkit

The quest starts when you find the Journal of Wilf Wainwright in a chest beneath the floorboards of an abandoned house along the road west from Whiterun. It tells you how Wilf was put out of business by a bunch of bandits, sent by the Guild of Wainwrights in Cyrodiil, to maintain their monopoly. His tools were all stolen, and scattered across Skyrim. You need to retrieve the tools before you can start making a wagon of your own.

One of the tools in particular, a spokeshave, is one that only a wainwright would use, and you can't find another. Saws, hammers and tongs are more common, but it would be better to have Wilf's set back together.

Find the Tools

This is a list of possible locations for the Tools:

Eastmarch Falkreath Hold Haafingar Hjaalmarch The Pale The Rift Whiterun Hold Winterhold SolstheimDB
Cragslane Cavern
Gallows Rock
Lost Knife Hideout
Stony Creek Cave
Uttering Hills Camp
Wreck of the Winter War
Bilegulch Mine
Cracked Tusk Keep
Embershard
Knifepoint Ridge
Broken Oar Grotto Orotheim
Robber's Gorge
Frostmere Crypt Broken Helm Hollow
Faldar's Tooth
Rift Watchtower
Treva's Watch
Halted Stream Camp
Redoran's Retreat
Swindler's Den
Valtheim Keep
White River Watch
Fort Fellhammer Bloodskal Barrow
Damphall Mine
Hrodulf's House

Acquiring each tool will involve visiting the hideout in question. Track down, and either slay or sneak past its bandit inhabitants to take the tool from the boss chest at the end of the dungeon. As you retrieve each tool, the quest will advance and show the location of the next. Finally, you'll be told to return and repair the forge.

Your Reward

Once you have restored the forge to operation, you will be able to build your own (driveable) wagon.

  • Any text displayed in angle brackets (e.g., <Alias=LocationHold>) is dynamically set by the Radiant Quest system, and will be filled in with the appropriate word(s) when seen in game.
  • Not all Journal Entries may appear in your journal; which entries appear and which entries do not depends on the manner in which the quest is done.
  • Stages are not always in order of progress. This is usually the case with quests that have multiple possible outcomes or quests where certain tasks may be done in any order. Some stages may therefore repeat objectives seen in other stages.
  • If an entry is marked as "Finishes Quest" it means the quest disappears from the Active Quest list, but you may still receive new entries for that quest.
  • On the PC, it is possible to use the console to advance through the quest by entering setstage FreeformCaravansA stage, where stage is the number of the stage you wish to complete. It is not possible to un-complete (i.e. go back) quest stages, but it is possible to clear all stages of the quest using resetquest FreeformCaravansA.
