Lathenil is an Altmer Master Wizard, and part of the syndicate that defended the Crystal Tower against the Daedra during the Oblivion Crisis in the Summerset Isle. The Crystal Tower was destroyed just before the Avatar of Akatosh banished Mehrunes Dagon from Tamriel, and the Deadra with him. The Thalmor took credit for the Daedra's sudden disappearance, even though they had nothing to do with it.
The mage Rynandor the Bold spoke out against the Thalmor, but his version of events wasn't what the people wanted to hear. The Thalmor arranged for his arrest, and exile to the mainland. Rynandor was put on a ship for Anvil, and Lathenil followed on another. Rynandor never arrived.
Notes
- The book Rising Threat appears in the game Skyrim. It tells Lathenil's account of the early days of the Thalmor, which overlap with the period of this quest. At the point that you meet him, he has not yet written anything down.
