Detailed Walkthrough

A ship from Sunhold

Taminwe tells you that Newheim the Portly, harbormaster of Anvil, has reported that the first ship has arrived from the Summerset Isle since the Oblivion Crisis. Since none of the Imperial agents were aboard, she'd like you to go to Anvil to gather any news from the crew, or from any passengers that came with the ship.

Lathenil of Sunhold

The ship has already left again by the time you arrive in Anvil, so you can't talk to the crew. You find an Altmer by the name of Lathenil of Sunhold, who is looking for another mage colleague named Rynandor, who was supposed to have travelled on the ship before his. Since it didn't arrive, he fears for Rynandor's safety, and suspects a group called the Thalmor are behind Rynandor's disappearance. He blames the Thalmor for everything bad that happens, and you begin to think he's a bit paranoid (even though he's not a Bosmer).

Assassin

Just because he's paranoid, it doesn't mean there's no justification for it, and an assassin makes an attempt on his life. The attacker is using chameleon, but Lathenil's ring of detect life makes his presence known, if only to Lathenil. The Altmer hits his attacker with a fireball spell, and the guards arrest him. You can help him if you want, but Lathenil should manage all right on his own.

Safer in Jail

You go visit Lathenil in jail at the Castle, and advise him to remain there for a while. He'll be safer from further attempts to assassinate him. After that, maybe Gweden? That's where Silanu chose to hide, after all.

Report back to Taminwe, who'll be leery of the mage's tall tales of the Thalmor. She sees a potential threat from this group, but doubts that they're anything like as powerful as Lathenil seems to think.

You may have different ideas, as a number of assassins hired by the Thalmor come looking for you. The first one may get to you before or after you talk to Taminwe, depending on how you travel back to the city. The quest will advance after you've dealt with three of them. Your conversation with Taminwe will depend on whether or not you've been attacked. The Assassin are, in order, a female dunmer archer with a chameleon cuirass, a Redguard in heavy armor, and a Breton mage, who will try to paralyze you before summoning something to finish you off.

Rising Threat (GS25)
Stage Finishes Quest Journal Entry
10 A ship has arrived in Anvil, from Sunhold in the Summerset Isle. Taminwe wants me to go gather any news from the passengers and crew about how the Oblivion crisis affected the Altmer homeland.
20 I've just been accosted by an angry Altmer mage called Lathenil of Sunhold, ranting about someone called Rynandor, and a bunch of Altmer wizards called the Thalmor. He seems to believe that the latter are responsible for the disappearance of the former, and suspects foul play.
30 I found a note on the would-be assassin that named Lathenil as his target. Maybe he's not so paranoid after all.
40 Well that complicates things! Lathenil has just been arrested.
50 I should be able to visit Lathenil in jail, and find out what he knows about that Bosmer. If the Thalmor want him dead that much, there's more to his story than I thought at first.
60 Lathenil has decided to lay low at Gweden for a while. I hope these Thalmor he keeps on about can't find him there. Meanwhile, I'd better let Taminwe and Ocato know about this.
70 (Assassins start to hunt for the player)
80 It appears that Lathenil was right about attracting the attention of the Thalmor.
90 Another assassin sent to try and kill me. This is getting tiresome.
100 I passed on what I knew of Lathenil and the Thalmor. Perhaps Ocato will have a better understanding of Altmer society than I do and make sense of it all.
120 That's the third assassin I've had to deal with. I do hope the Thalmor get the point, and stop trying to kill me.
150 0Yes Lathenil's probably happily hidden away at Gweden by now. I should look for him when I'm there next.
