Playable Orc

I played Daggerfall only after playing Oblivion, so where I started up the game, and went to create my first character, my reaction was "where's the Orc?" I played a nord, instead, but started work on making Orcs playable, too.

There was no official Construction Set for Daggerfall, so I looked around for tools, and found Andypic, which let me extract the image files into an editable form. I also found some tools for building quests and editing the .exe file. Now I had enough parts to work on a mod.

The appeared to be no way to simply add a new race, but I could replace one of the existing ones. "High Elf" and "Nord" were each one letter longer than "Orsimer" and "Orc" so text substitution was feasible. The image files for the base body and heads had a simple naming convention, and I could produce a replacement set of green ones. And Orcs are the same shape as elves and humans, so all the clothes fit. That was enough to make it work.

The races chosen for sunstitution were those to which no major NPC characters belonged. So Dark Elf was not considered, as Morgiah, Helseth and their mother Barenziah were all Dunmer, at least after their portraits were patched. Bretons are all over the place, Khajiit and Argonians have a different set of clothes, etc.

The installation of the mod needs DOS tools, which have to run under DosBox, like the game itself. This is not the simple "drop it in the right folder" installation you're familiar with in the other TES games. A lot of people can't even handle that and need Mod Managers to do it for them. If you're one of those, don't try this at home.

And finally, the lack of an "Images" tab is because in-game screenshots dom't show the player character, and I did not introduce more than a couple of new Orc NPC's, and their images are already in the Fake Wiki content, if not for this mod, then for the Guild one.

Mod as last uploaded to the Nexus.

The readme has not been updated, so references to the Nexus site are obsolete. This is now the only legitimate source.

Note that the installation process for this is nothing like as simple as an Oblivion or Skyrim mod. The patch process has to be run under DosBox, like the game itself, so only try this if you know what you're doing!
