Detailed Walkthrough

Waterfront

Nobody comes to give you this quest, you have to go find it for yourself. When you emerge from the Thieves Guild headquarters, you'll likely find a Redguard in a strange guard's uniform wandering around outside. Once you get close enough to her, the quest will announce itself, and you'll be prompted to talk to her. If she's not around, it's because she got hungry and went for a meal at the Bloated Float.

When you talk to her, you'll find that she's looking for the Gray Fox, or someone who can represent the Thieves Guild. There's an item that's gone missing from Sentinel Castle, and she's authorized to negotiate its return. Financially, or otherwise. If you read the in-game book Night Falls on Sentinel, a Blunt weapon skill book, then you'll know her name - Haballa - and what she can do for negotiation.

Since you're still listening to her story, she assumes you'll be able to contact the Thieves Guild. She tells you that the item is a magical painting that shows the true events of the recent past. It was obtained by Queen Akorith of Sentinel from Wayrest, and the painting is commonly known as the Wayrest Painting because of that. It was believed to have stopped working after the Warp in the West, but the current King Lhotun believes that was just a reflection of the actual chaos. He wanted to consult the painting when he heard of the Emperor's assassination, but found it missing.

She gives you a clue that Chorrol's court mage might know something about it.

Chorrol

The court mage Haballa referred to is Chanel. You may have already done the quest Canvas the Castle and depending on your choices, Chanel may no longer be there. In that case, another mage will take her place, and give you somewhat less information. The best scenario is if you haven't done that quest, as it will give you temporary access to the castle's private areas. If you have, you're a master thief, and won't have any real difficulties anyway.

Once you have talked to both the mage and the Countess, you need to search the Castle (i.e enter each one of the towers that area reached from the private area, including the Arch tower beyond the West tower.) You find nothing, so you go ask the Countess if anyone else knew about the painting.

She remembers talking to the other counts and countesses about it, but the only one who showed any interest was Millona Umbranox of Anvil. Arriana Valga thinks that was because Anvil has its own painter, Astia Inventius. Even though Rythe Lythandas is more famous, Count Indarys really isn't interested in art.

Anvil

Millona Umbranox doesn't appear to know anything about the painting, other than having heard of it. Corvus, her husband, and ex-Gray Fox, at least knows that it wasn't the Thieves Guild that took it, as it would have been stolen while he was Guildmaster.

You search another castle, and should find a few secret passages leading from the areas you can access without trepassing. In one of them there's a door with a Very Hard lock, that leads to a room containing a painting of Corvus' return to Anvil. You wonder why it's hidden away like that, and go back and ask the Countess. She confesses that it's the Wayrest Painting, and it's now showing her most important past event. When she got it, in the hope of finding a clue to her missing husband, all it showed were a faceless old man handing something to an equally faceless younger one.

Corvus realises that it must have shown the Gray Fox before him handing over the Cowl of Nocturnal. The curse is why the faces couldn't be shown, and he can't remember the old man's name. He's delighted that Millona would have considered having the painting stolen for him.

Go back to Haballa and tell her where the painting is. She'll go and negotiate the terms for its return with Corvus and Millona, after giving you a cash reward for the information.

10 There's a woman in an unfamiliar guard uniform wandering in the Waterfront district. I should ask her why she's here.
20 Her name is Haballa, and she's here looking for a magical painting that was stolen from the Castle in Sentinel. She has a clue that points to the court mage in Chorrol.
30 I spoke to both the Countess and her court mage, and neither helped me find the painting. It looks like I'll have to search the castle for it.
40 I've searched all the likely locations in Chorrol Castle without finding anything. I should ask the Countess if anyone else knew about it.
50 Countess Valga told me that the other counts and countesses knew about the Wayrest Painting, but only Millona Umbranox showed any interest. Perhaps I should go to Anvil next.
60 Neither Count Corvus not Countess Millona can help me. It looks like I have another castle to search.
70 I found a painting in a locked room off a secret passage in Anvil Castle. It shows Corvus' return to the castle, just as I remember it. I should ask the Countess why it's hidden away like that.
80 Millona has told me that the painting is actually the Wayrest Painting I was looking for. I wonder what her husband has to say.
90 Count Umbranox seemed delighted at the revelation that Millona thought him worth stealing for. I'm sure if I send Haballa down here to negotiate with them, they'll come to a fair agreement for the return of the painting. I should go back the waterfront and tell her.
100 0Yes Haballa gave me a reward for finding the painting. She's going to see the Count and Countess in Anvil to arrange for its return to Sentinel.
